The rankings of these golfers are determined by the ranking points they have obtained through tournaments such as the PGA Tour, European Tour and the World Golf Championships. This article explores the top 10 male golfers in 2008, and see how they bring the game to a whole new level.
#1: Tiger Woods. If you have not heard of him, you are probably from the planet Mars. Born in 1975, December 30, he is one of the highest-paid professional athlete around, with an estimated worth of $750 million. To date, he has won 14 major golf championships and is also the youngest player to win 50 tournaments on tour. Woods is married to Elin Nordegren, a Swedish model and they are
expecting their second child.
#2: Sergio García. He is a Spanish professional golfer and reached his current ranking after winning the HSBC Champions tournament in November 2008. His father taught him how to play golf at the tender age of 3. Sergio turned professional in 1999 and came under the spotlight when he fought Tiger in the 1999 PGA Championship and finished second. Look out for this guy.
#3: Philip Alfred Mickelson. For many years Mickelson was often described as the “best golfer never to win a major.” Born in San Diego, he won his first PGA Tour tournament in 1991. He is the second-highest paid athlete in the world, behind Tiger Woods. He earned $51 million and $62 million in 2006 and 2007 respectively. In 1990, he became the first left-hander to win the U.S. Amateur title.
#4: Pádraig Harrington. After a successful amateur career, including winning the Walker Cup with the Great Britain & Ireland team in 1995, Harrington turned professional later that year, joining the European Tour in 1996. Married with 2 sons, Harrington is currently the number one player in Europe.
#5: Vijay Singh. He turned professional in 1982 and won the Malaysian PGA Championship in 1984. He has won three major championships (The Masters in 2000 and the PGA Championship in 1998 and 2004) and was the leading PGA Tour money winner in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, he netted a total of $7.5 million in winnings, beating Tiger Woods by almost a million dollars. Vijay is married to Ardena Seth and they have a son.
#6: Robert Karlsson. He was born in Katrineholm, Sweden. He turned professional in 1989. What began as a humble start had him darting to the top. Karlsson’s second victory of 2006 at the Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe in July helped him reach the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings and in 2008 he entered the top 25. His win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship took him to number 8 in October 2008.
#7: Camilo Villegas. He began playing on the PGA Tour in 2004 and earned his PGA Tour card just prior to the 2006 season. Camilo won his first PGA Tour title in September 2008, winning the BMW Championship by two shots over Dudley Hart. He then beat Sergio García in a playoff in The Tour Championship which took him to his current ranking.
#8: Henrik Stenson. Henrik turned professional in 1999 and the following year topped the money rankings on the second tier golf tour in Europe, the Challenge Tour. In February 2007, he reached number eight in the rankings following his victory at the Dubai Desert Classic and became the highest ranked European golfer for the first time. He is married to Emma Lofgren and they have a daughter.
#9: Ernie Els. He was a former world number 1 and has been one of the top professional players in the world since the mid-1990s. His best year is probably 2002 where he won the Heineken Classic at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Then outplayed World Number one Tiger Woods to lift the Genuity Championship title. Els overcame a four man playoff to take home the famed Claret Jug for the first time. He also took home his fourth World Match Play title, along with his third Nedbank Challenge in the last four years dominating a world class field winning by 8 shots. Ernie Els holds the record for most weeks in the World Top 10, with 756.
#10: Lee John Westwood. He won his first professional tournament, the Volvo Scandinavian Masters in 1996, then closely followed by the Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters in Japan. He is one of the few golfers who has won tournaments on every continent. His best ranking stood at number 4. Married to Laurae Coltart, they have 2 children.

Can you look over my english oration?
I have to make an oration in front of the freshmen class, each of us get assigned a school subject, I got assigned sports. Then we have to write a 5-7 minute oration proving something is unethical.
Here is my rough draft, opinion and tips are greatly appreciated…THANKS
Did you hear? Oh My God!!! I can’t believe that happened! Have you heard? I’m sure you all want to know what I’m talking about right? I’ve gotten you interested. Gossip gossip gossip! Everyone loves it! It puts you on the edge of your seat. Weather its reading it in a magazine such as US Weekly, watching it on The Insider, reading about it on perezhitlon.com a top ranked gossip site or even an educational newspaper, the enquirer, us as humans are fueled by gossip. Statistics have shown that it would take only 30 minutes to sell the amount of magazine needed to cover a complete football pitch.
What is gossip and why do we love it so much? Is there any real truth in gossip? Gossip gives eyes and voice to everything. Weather it about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt or the now infamous Tiger Woods. Today I will narrow the topic of gossip down towards gossip towards top athletes. Because of intense media and public interest in the private lives of sports celebrities, these talented athletes must constantly be on guard so as not to be exploited by tabloid journalism.
Famous athletes strive for greatness. Famous athletes reach for perfection. Famous athletes are determined to win the race, to sink the winning shot, to hit the home run. However, once they reach the top, once they achieve hero status, top athletes often abuse their greatness. Numerous top athletes nowadays have allowed fame to get to their heads, and believe they can do anything because they are “indestructible” or invincible and above the law.
For example, the popular Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods is an American professional golfer whose achievements to date rank him among the most successful golfers of all time. Currently the number one in the world, he was the highest-paid professional athlete in 2008, having earned an about $110 million from winnings and endorsements. All that fame must have gone to his head in one way or another. Right? For instance I’m sure you’ve all heard that he cheated on his wife. It’s not my place to judge, because most relationships go through some sort of problems and most men go through a bit of temptation, but it seems like Tiger has become a bit of a “cheetah.” It seems like he had a tad more than a bit of temptation when he had sexual relationships with over 17 different women. Still in no position to judge, because that is his own personal life and non of our business. WAIT. It is our business. Because of Tigers position, its quite our business indeed.
If I know that Woods has won 14 professional major gold champions, and is the second highest of any male player. I am constantly notified that Tiger is the youngest player to achieve the career Grand Slam, and the youngest and fastest to win 50 tournaments on tour. If I can know all of that and praise him for it, I have the right to know the negativity as well. Fame is powerful, but can hurt you. Fame for athletes is like a double edge sword, one side is fame and glory and the other side is a ticket for the press to leak all the gossip.
Tiger Woods and most top athletes are put on a pedestal, and fame does not make them indestructible. It’s quite the opposite actually: their job puts them in the public eye for everyone
to enjoy, and that is just something they have to deal with. Fame with athletes is difficult. It seems as though athletes ignorantly seem to think that fame means that you can get away with anything and everything. They seem to think they are on top of the world and are simply indestructible.
(Show Poster Of Famous Athlete Mug Shots)
It doesn’t seem like any of these famous athletes are indestructible. I’ll leave it up to you for the judging because these pictures are just flooding around everywhere because these athletes are constantly in the public viewing of everyone. But if you look at this top picture here, of OJ Simpson a former football player who murdered his ex-wife and her best friend, you forget that he was the first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. Or Kobe Bryant a former basketball player who sexually assaulted a 19 year old, you forget that he was the same person that scored the second highest number of points in a single game in NBA history. The only thing I think about is how stupid these people are for ruining their future, but thats just my opinion. Many opinions are flooded around about these people because they are constantly in the pubic eye.
I came across a word that describes this situation with the utmost accuracy. Schadenfreude. Schadenfreude by definition means satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune. And isn’t that what happens. How many people here laugh i
if their friends when they fall? Now, how many hate drama yet love spreading gossip? We’re only human. Now, imagine a famous person, lets say Michael Phelps for example, an Olympic winning swimmer, falls, or perhaps smokes weed and gossip spreads. We can’t help ourselves but run to the excitement and listen to what’s going on. Athletes have to watch themselves. It is unethical for athletes to behave in certain ways because their job puts them in the public eye. Since they are constantly in public view it is a necessity to be ethical and smart in the choices they make.
In Conclusion a top athlete has a lot for a person to admire, strength, ambition and talent. They get idolized, and put on a pedestal as someone special because of their skills. But because of this, they have to be safe in their actions since they are viewed as such superior people.
THANKS! ANY TIPS AND ADVICE ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED=)
Sounds really good and well put together. Your ideas flow nicely.

Throughout the presentation you talk about how the athletes are NOT being safe in their actions, but in the closing sentence you say they need to be.. its a little contradicting. Overall I think you did a great job though! Your a great writer.

Great start. It gets your audience’s attention.
The body of your talk could go to either the actions of sports people is unethical after they reach a level of success ….
… or the unrealistic expectations of newspapers and media on sports celebrities is unethical.
Work that out and make it a bit clearer for your listeners. The earlier you make that clear, the easier it is to see where you are taking them on your 5-7 minute journey.
Finish off with something they can applaud.
